What is the Ankara Agreement?
The Ankara Agreement, officially known as the Agreement between Turkey and the European Economic Community (EEC), was signed on September 12, 1963. The EEC is the precursor to what is now the European Union (EU). This agreement was designed to regulate economic and trade relations between Turkey and European countries, and it represents a significant step towards Turkey’s EU membership.
Key Aspects of the Ankara Agreement
Customs Union Establishment: One of the primary objectives of the agreement is the establishment of a customs union between Turkey and the EEC. This means the removal of tariffs and customs restrictions on goods traded between the two parties. Turkey benefits from preferential conditions for exports to the EU, while EU countries enjoy lower or zero tariffs on imports from Turkey.
Free Trade across the Continent: The agreement aims to promote free trade between the two parties. This involves the liberalization of trade along with the movement of labor and capital.
Economic and Technical Cooperation: The Ankara Agreement promotes economic and technical cooperation between Turkey and the EEC. This includes the financing of various projects, technical assistance, and partnership opportunities.
Partnership and Support Programs: The agreement allows Turkey to establish partnership relations with the European Economic Community and benefit from various support programs. These supports aim to aid Turkey's economic and social development.
Developing Relations and EU Membership: The Ankara Agreement envisions strengthening relations with the EU in line with Turkey’s full membership goals and implementing various reforms. Turkey is expected to align with EU standards during this process.
